Square-Gradient Scattering Mechanism in Surface-Corrugated Waveguides

چکیده
In this work we study the surface scattering mechanisms from rough surfaces of a multimode quasi-1D waveguide (conducting quantum wires). The square-gradient scattering mechanism, which was missed in existing studies of the transport through surface-corrugated waveguides, is discovered. The main attention is paid to the interplay between the new mechanism and the known one, as well as its effect on the waveguide transport properties. For any value of the roughness height σ, the square-gradient terms in the expression for the wave-scattering length (electron mean-free path) are dominant, provided the correlation length Rc of the surface disorder is small enough.

Anomalous Selective Transparency of Many-Mode Surface-Corrugated Waveguides
We study the role of long-range correlations in random surface profiles for the transport through many-mode waveguides. It is found that the correlations that result in a perfect transmission for a single-mode case, lead to a quite unexpected phenomenon when the number of modes is large. Specifically, we show that these long-range correlations give rise to the appearance of non-interacting and ...
متن کاملNonlinear finite-difference time-domain modeling of linear and nonlinear corrugated waveguides
A multidimensional, nonlinear finite-difference time-domain (NL-FDTD) simulator, which is constructed from a self-consistent solution of the full-wave vector Maxwell equations and dispersive (Lorentz), nonlinear (finitetime-response Raman and instantaneous Kerr) materials models, is used to study finite-length, corrugated, optical waveguide output couplers and beam steerers. Multiple-cycle, ult...
متن کاملBallistic, diffusive, and localized transport in surface-disordered systems: two-mode waveguide.
This paper presents an analytical study of the coexistence of different transport regimes in quasi-one-dimensional surface-disordered waveguides (or electron conductors). To elucidate main features of surface scattering, the case of two open modes (channels) is considered in great detail. Main attention is paid to the transmission in dependence on various parameters of the model with two types ...
متن کاملAtomic and molecular hydrogen interacting with Pt„111..
This computational study is motivated by the apparent conflict between an experiment on dissociation of H2 and D2 on Pt~111!, which suggests a rather corrugated potential energy surface ~PES! for the H2/Pt~111! system, and an experiment showing only weak nonzero-order diffraction of HD scattering from Pt~111!. In the calculations we have used density functional theory ~DFT! within the generaliz...
متن کاملInversion of randomly corrugated surface structure from atom scattering data
The sudden approximation is applied to invert structural data on randomly corrugated surfaces from inert atom scattering intensities. Several expressions relating experimental observables to surface statistical features are derived. The results suggest that atom (and in particular He) scattering can be used profitably to study hitherto unexplored forms of complex surface disorder.
